Whether you're moving out of first year into upper year or off-campus housing, or moving to UBC from afar, collecting kitchen tools is an important part of setting up your new home.

If you don’t know where to start, here is a list of essential and nice-to-have kitchen tools to get you on the right track.

To save some money, look for these items in thrift stores, Craigslist, Facebook Marketplace, or even ask family and friends. You will be amazed what you can find!

If you're living with roommates, don't forget to ask what they are bringing and what you can share – or you might end up with four blenders and no cupboard space.

Essential Kitchen Tools:

  1. Cutlery (forks, spoons, knives)
  2. Plates
  3. Bowls
  4. Cups and mugs
  5. Can opener
  6. Measuring cups
  7. Measuring spoons
  8. Kitchen knives
  9. Cutting board
  10. Tongs
  11. Spatula
  12. Ladle or large spoon
  13. Large pot
  14. Frying pan
  15. Baking sheet
  16. Oven mitts
  17. Mixing bowl
  18. Storage containers (for leftover foods and lunches)
  19. Re-usable water bottle (to take around campus)

Nice to haves:

  1. Garlic press
  2. Vegetable peeler
  3. Whisk
  4. Coffee maker or French press
  5. Kettle
  6. Ice cube tray
  7. Colander
  8. Blender
  9. Food processor
  10. Toaster
  11. Slow cooker

Everyone cooks differently! Some of the things on this list might not be essentials for you, and it might be missing some things that you can't cook without. Use this list as a starting point to set yourself up for success in the kitchen.
