Where else can you find gourmet burgers, Indian food, Latin American street food, poke, and a salad bar serving UBC Farm produce all in one place?

Our residence dining rooms are open to the public! Gather, Feast and Open Kitchen feature diverse and globally-inspired menus that incorporate fresh Ocean Wise™ seafood, certified halal beef burgers and fresh chicken, and a variety of vegan and vegetarian options. We are proud to source more than 60% of our ingredients locally from the UBC Farm and other BC producers.

COVID-19 Protocols and Best Practices

Prior to Entry

  • If you are feeling sick, do not go to the residence dining room.
  • Complete daily self-assessment for COVID 19.
  • Contact your Residence Life Manager if you require assistance with meals.
  • Sanitize your hands prior to entering the servery and/or seating area.
  • You can preview the menu before arriving in the dining room by using Nutrislice.

When in the servery and seating areas

  • Face masks are optional.
  • Use hand sanitizer as provided at self serve stations in the servery area.
  • Adhere to signage posted regarding entrances and exits.
  • Be respectful of time spent in the seating space during busy service periods to ensure other residents may sit down to eat their meal.

  • To avoid line ups and crowds, try to dine at off-peak times: 11:30am-12:00pm/1:30pm-2:00pm/5:00pm-6:00pm/7:30-8:00pm

Your Gather Team

Kerensa Wotton

Manager, Gather

Kerensa’s passion for hospitality and feeding people with care and kindness is well known across campus. Having served the UBC community with Scholar’s Catering for several years, she is now the Manager, Residence Dining for Gather at Vanier. Beginning her hospitality career at the Westin Bayshore in 1992 while completing a hospitality diploma, she also brings years of experience at numerous Vancouver hotels, including the Sheraton Vancouver Wall Centre, Metropolitan Vancouver and Hilton Metrotown, along with Compass Group Canada. A food lover through and through, she is also head chef for her daughter, twin boys and loving husband.

David Speight

Culinary Director & Executive Chef

David’s passion for food is rivaled only by his dedication to health and sustainability. Born and raised in Vancouver, David is somewhat of a culinary legend at Rogers Arena where, as executive chef for six years, he developed a nutrition program for the Vancouver Canucks, kept 2010 Canadian Olympic hockey players properly fueled for their big games, and frequently prepared gourmet meals for visiting celebrities, recording artists, and heads of state. He also implemented an organization-wide recycling, composting, and food donation program.

David has held executive chef positions at Monk McQueen’s Seafood & Oyster Bar and Bridges restaurant. He is a graduate of the Culinary Institute of America in New York.

Johnny stepped into the culinary world when he was 16 and has worked in over 55 kitchens throughout his career. He’s a major champion of local, sustainable seafood and is making change one ingredient at a time. You might recognize Johnny from his time as Catering and Mobile Chef for UBC Food Services.

What's the vision behind Gather?

Gather takes inspiration from bold international flavours and local ingredients. It is envisioned as a space for students to gather, refuel, and feel at home, as well as a gathering place that welcomes the campus community as a whole. The bright, modern design showcases the best offerings from our experienced culinary team, including a spectacular salad bar, gourmet burgers and fries, plant-based delicacies, Latin American flavours, sushi burritos and poke bowls, Indian food and more.

What makes Gather different from other university dining operations?

Taking inspiration from Open Kitchen, Gather did not adapt the typical 21-day rotational menu cycle used at most other residence dining facilities; instead, about 70% of the menu is now static with daily and weekly features. This innovative move give our culinary team the opportunity to focus on perfecting a range of unique and delectable signature dishes. Examples include authentic Latin American dishes like tacos, ceviche and empanadas; handmade burgers made from local beef; hearty vegetarian fare; sushi burritos and poke bowls; and an exquisite salad bar featuring fresh seasonal ingredients from the UBC Farm.

Gather is located on Lower Mall near University Boulevard. Hubbard's Market, Harvest and Mercante are right nearby. The Loop, Open Kitchen, Hero Coffee + Market, and Feast Dining Room are within a few minutes walk of Place Vanier.
