Farmers market season is upon us, with the first of three weekly UBC Farm Markets opening this Wednesday, June 1st! The Wednesday Farm Market runs from 11am-2pm outside the UBC Bookstore and is an ideal place to grab a snack between classes, purchase certified organic fresh fruits and vegetables for lunch, or do your grocery shopping before heading home. Also opening this week is their multi-vendor Saturday market on June 4th, followed next week by their Tuesday evening market on June 8th, both located at UBC Farm.
What is the UBC Farm?
The UBC Farm is a certified organic 24-acre farm situated in a 90-year old hemlock forest on the southwest edge of campus. It cultivates over 200 varieties of fruits, vegetables and herbs, and also features honey beehives, seed production, flowers, and egg-laying pasture-raised hens. More than just a working farm, it serves as a unique research, teaching and learning space at UBC's Centre for Sustainable Food Systems.
From field to plate
If you've eaten at one of our dining halls recently, chances are you've enjoyed some hyper-local produce from UBC farm. UBC Food Services has been sourcing fresh produce from the farm since 2007, and we proudly feature it year-round on menus at Feast, Gather, Open Kitchen, The Point and Sage.
As the farm's largest wholesale customer, we buy over $100,000 in fruits and veggies from them each year! In harvest season, up to 25% of our offerings include UBC Farm-grown food, and our chefs work hard in the summer months to preserve some of the bounty so it can be enjoyed in dishes the rest of the year.
