Join us for the Beyond the Plate Recipe Competition to win great prizes!
What's in it for me?
Just by submitting your recipe video or photo essay, you will be entered into a draw for three great prizes, valued up to $50 each!
Five finalists will be selected from each of the streams (video and photo essay). If you are selected as one of the ten finalists, you receive all of the following prizes:
- $50 gift card for Save-On Foods
- $50 gift card for PlantSome
Plus, you’ll have an opportunity to provide us with more information about your recipe and its background, parts of which will be included in the Beyond the Plate Final Showcase.
Students and other members of the UBC community will have the opportunity to view the Showcase videos and photo essays, and then vote on their favourite – if your video or photo essay is selected as the winner, in addition to bragging rights, you will receive a prize valued up to $150, and your recipe may be featured in a UBC dining hall in September!
How do I enter the competition?
You have two options (and you can submit multiple recipes if you’d like!):
Video
- Record a 2-3 minute (or less!) video showing us how to make your recipe.
- Upload your video to YouTube (see below for some useful how-to links!)
- Submit your recipe video, and tell us how the recipe connects with the Thrive 5, five evidence-based ways to foster and maintain good mental health!
Make sure to include your recipe video link in the submission form!
How do I make a video?
There are some great introductory videos about filming and editing videos on this channel, including this one to get your started.
You can download and use Camtasia, which is a very user-friendly video editing software – it is freely available to UBC students; the instructions for downloading can be found here.
VEED is a popular online video editing software/website – it’s free to try for videos up to 10 minutes in length (we’re only asking for less than 3 minutes!).
Here is a video that shows you how to upload to YouTube.
And if video editing just isn’t your thing, use this as a chance to connect with friends or others in your community who might want to help out!
Photo Essay
- Take at least 5 and no more than 10 photos of the steps in your recipe (including you/friends enjoying it if you’d like, too!).
- Number each photo in the order you would like them to appear.
- Create a text-only document (Word or PDF) that provides your recipe in as much detail as you think is needed, up to 500 words – be sure to include the number of each photo where it should be included when we merge everything!
- Submit your recipe video, and tell us how the recipe connects with the Thrive 5, five evidence-based ways to foster and maintain good mental health!
What is a Photo Essay?
Essentially, you are telling us the story of how to make your recipe, using a combination of words and photos. You can even take your photos using your phone; no special equipment required!
There are some good examples of recipe photo essays here:
- A Canadian Foodie
- Veggie Muffin
- Picture the Recipe-Banana Bread
- Picture the Recipe-Indian Style Shakshouka
What are you looking for?
Judges from across campus will select five finalists based on:
- student-friendliness (a.k.a. easy to prepare & budget-friendly)
- emphasis on plant-based ingredients
- connection to at least 2 of the Thrive 5+
- originality (and potential taste) of the recipe – family or cultural traditions are also encouraged!
- quality and clarity of recipe instructions
Recipes will be accepted until February 28th, 2022.
Submit your recipe. We want to see it!
