Gage Market, Hubbards Global Market, and Magda’s Late Night Market are often places students head for a late night treat, and it can be hard to see them as anything more than the fastest way to a sugar coma. But these three markets, as well as Harvest in Ponderosa Commons and Hero Coffee + Market in Orchard Commons, stock options with nutritious ingredients too! With a little help you can find healthy snacks, simple meal ingredients, and some tasty treats.

Next time you’re looking for simple snack or meal ideas, check out these options at your local market:

1. A piece of fruit.

Whole fruits are a quick and portable snack. Gage, Hubbards, Magda’s and Harvest sell apples, oranges and bananas. Pair them with low fat yogurt or some nuts or nut butter for a balanced snack.

2. Dinner in a flash.

Coming home late from class and thinking about ordering pizza? Pick up whole wheat pasta and tomato sauce from Gage or Harvest instead. You’ll have dinner in less time than it takes pizza to be delivered. Buy a bag of frozen vegetables while you’re there and heat them up in your pasta sauce for an easy and healthy meal!

3. Snack on popcorn.

Popcorn is a healthy and filling snack, and a better choice than other snack foods like chips. Grab some kernels and a paper bag and make your own microwave popcorn. Or, grab a bag of lightly salted pre-popped popcorn from any of the markets.

4. Make a breakfast omelet.

Grab eggs from Gage or Harvest and make a simple omelet paired with leftover veggies from your pasta dinner in #2. Add a piece of toast and you’ve got an easy breakfast that will keep you full until lunch.

5. Take a smoothie to go.

Hero doesn’t just sell delicious organic and fair trade coffee and pastries. They also make healthy smoothies with whole foods and no added sugar! Try the Peanut Butter Crunch for a boost of protein.

6. Crackers and hummus.

A simple, filling snack to get you through those 3-hour lectures. Grab some cheese and pair it with crackers and hummus from any of the markets. We especially love the veggie cup with house-made hummus!
